Adichie. The Danger of a Single Story

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie is a novelist from Nigeria; you can find out more about her life and work at Wikipedia.

The Danger of a Single Story

In this talk, Adichie explains what it was like growing up in Nigeria but reading British and American books in which the characters were foreign to her. When she came to America for college, the generic, single story of "Africa" that people had in their minds did not fit her. In turn, Adichie realized that she had a single story in her mind about poor people in Nigeria, a single story about Mexicans, and so on. Stereotypes are not just untrue; they are incomplete. A single story is not enough. Listen to Adichie's TED talk to learn more about the power of many stories instead of just a single story.
