Persian Word in English: Jujube

The English word JUJUBE is used for various types of candy. In the United States, jujubes have a hard consistency like resin. In other countries, jujube candies are softer and chewier. You can read more about jujube candies at Wikipedia.

The word itself comes from medieval Latin jujuba, from Greek zizyphon, which in turn comes from Persian zayzafun, referring to a tree which produces a date-like fruit. The tree is sometimes called the Chinese date or Indian date tree. The image below  shows some fresh jujube fruits.
