Hindi Word in English: Sitar

The word SITAR comes from Hindi sitar, which in turn comes from Urdu/Persian sitar, meaning "three-stringed" (si-tar), although modern sitars have as many as twenty strings. You can read more about the history of the sitar in this Wikipedia article.
